Galway secures three Seanad seats, but could win more

Three Galwegians have secured seats in the Seanad Éireann, with victories for Alice Mary Higgins, Sinn Féin's Trevor Ó Clochartaigh and Independent Ronán Mullen. However, with the count ongoing, more could join them.

Higgins meets with EU Commissioner over funding

Mayo based North-west MEP Jim Higgins this week met with EU Commissioner Johannes Hahn to discuss Ireland accessing funding from the EU Solidarity Fund (EUSF) to help with the clean-up following the recent storms. The cost of clean-up and restoration in Mayo alone has been projected to be at least €4.5 million by the local authority here. Speaking after his meeting with Commissioner Hahn, Higgins said: “If ever a country deserved solidarity funding, Ireland does. Commissioner Hahn controls the EU Solidarity Fund (EUSF), a fund which I believe we can access to secure, badly needed, funding to build adequate flood defences and rebuild our destroyed infrastructure."

Donncha O’Connell, lecturer in law at NUI Galway and human rights campaigner, has announced his candidacy in the forthcoming Seanad election on the NUI panel. Mr O’Connell, who comes from a well-known family in Swinford and whose mother, Bríd, is one of the Hughes of Westport, is one of 27 candidates seeking election to one of the three seats on the panel for which voting commences by postal ballot between March 21 and April 27.
